Bringing baby home to your dog

Bringing baby home to your dog

When you bring your baby home for the first time, it’s best to prepare your pet for this new family member. Before bringing your newborn home, have your spouse or close relative take a piece of baby clothing or a baby blanket that carries the infant's scent home for your pet to smell. Allow the pet to sniff the item so he can familiarize himself with the baby before she arrives at the house.

Keep the homecoming quiet. Lots of guests will only make your pet more nervous and excitable. Have dad or a familiar relative carry the baby in so mom can greet the pet. Your pet will be eager to see you return from the hospital.

Have someone else take the baby into another room while you give your pet a calm, warm welcome. Even something as simple as arriving home with a new squeaky toy for your pet will work wonders for the anxious dog. Anything you can do to make the baby's arrival a positive one for your dog will benefit everyone.

Keep the first meeting brief and supervised. It may help to have someone familiar hold your pet while mom holds the baby. Holding the pet provides a means of positive attention and safety.

After you settle in, allow your pet to sit next to you and the baby. Never force the pet to get close to the newborn and always supervise their interaction. Reward your pet with treats for appropriate behavior.

It's important that your dog accept NOT being the focus of attention for a period of time. Teach your dog to sit and stay on command—and reward him with treats.

Allow your dog to adjust to the smell, sight, and sound of the baby for a few days before introducing him face to face.

After a few days allow the dog to sniff the baby while controlled on a leash. Pet him and give him praise while he sniffs. Most dogs adapt easily, but always take precautions.

Once your dog is used to the baby's smell, allow the dog to sniff the baby while off the leash, as you watch over them.

Give your dog plenty of attention when the baby is around. You don't want Rex to decide good things only happen when the baby isn't around.

Don't scold the dog for picking up the baby's toys. You don't want the smell of the baby being associated with anything negative. Simply replace the child's toys with the dog's.

Never leave even the most trusted dog alone with a baby or small child.
