We are aware of recent media reports regarding trace, or extremely low, levels of melamine found in some infant formula products sold in the US. We would like parents and caregivers to be aware that only one Nestlé Good Start® product is affected by this issue, specifically, Good Start Supreme ARA/DHA, liquid formula sold in 8.45 ounce cans. Other Nestlé Good Start infant formula products, including powdered formula, other product sizes, and packaging types of infant formula are not affected.
"This is an isolated issue that affects only one formula product we sell," said Kurt Schmidt, CEO, Nestlé Nutrition, USA. "While these are very low levels of melamine, we will do whatever is necessary to correct the situation, including finding alternative packaging for this particular product."
The FDA reported finding levels of 0.137 parts per million and 0.140 parts per million in one sample of Good Start Supreme ARA/DHA, liquid formula in 8.45 ounce cans. The trace amounts are at levels far below the level deemed safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with numerous other governments including Canada, New Zealand and Hong Kong. In fact, the FDA established a threshold of 1 part per million of melamine as acceptable, making the Nestlé Good Start Supreme ARA/DHA, liquid formula in 8.45 ounce cans well within the stated FDA level.
Dr. Stephen Sundlof, FDA's director of food safety stated on Nov. 28, "the levels were so low ... that they do not cause a health risk to infants, and parents using infant formula should continue using U.S.-manufactured infant formula."
Nestlé uses only the highest quality ingredients to manufacture its products. All Nestlé Nutrition infant formula sold in the U.S. is manufactured at Nestlé factories in the United States. Nestlé does not outsource any of its infant formula production, and none of the protein or dairy used in Nestle Good Start formula is sourced from China.
Trace amounts of melamine can find its way into food if the food is processed with equipment made of plastic containing melamine or from packaging materials.
