Growth charts help monitor and keep track of your baby's physical growth and may serve as an indicator of when to look a little closer into her health and development. At each check up the doctor or nurse will measure your child's length (or height after her 2nd birthday), weight and head circumference. These measurements are compared to national averages for children of the same age and gender. There are different charts according to age group for each measurement. Our charts are based on the widely accepted growth charts from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and are intended to give a general idea of your child's growth. If your child's growth is within the shaded area, she is growing at similar rates to other children in the US her same age. Remember that your child is an individual and will grow at her own pace. There may be short periods where your baby may grow slightly faster or slightly slower than average. What's important is that she has an overall healthy growth pattern and is growing at a steady, appropriate rate. The growth curve on the chart, created from the length/height and weight measurements, shows how growth is progressing. Following your child's growth trend over time along the growth curve (the shaded area) rather than how much they gain or lose at any one point is key.
You can track your child's growth at home with weight, length/height measurements that you take yourself. Keep in mind that they will not be as accurate as measurements taken by the nurse or doctor during his check up. Just a few tips - remember to weigh your baby without clothes, including the diaper. To get a length/height measurement getting someone to help can make a difference.
