Crawler: Your 11-month-old
This month your baby will be further developing her communication skills, as she learns how to express her desires with gestures and words instead of cries.
First words
You can expect her to say a few one-syllable words (such as "hi") and to begin to string together multiple syllables. With your help she’ll also probably learn a few new words, colors, and numbers. Even if she doesn't know lots of words, you'll probably be able to decipher her baby sign language.
Your baby’s growth
At 11 months babies usually range from 27.25 inches long and 17.5 pounds (10th percentile) to 30.25 inches long and 23 pounds (90th percentile).
This month your baby may:
- cry when scolded, as she matures emotionally
- begin to stand without assistance
- repeat actions to get attention
- manipulate an object to get it out of a tight space
- place objects into a container, as her understanding of spatial relationships continues to develop
What you can do
- Talk as much as you can to your 11-month-old and listen respectfully as she tries to talk back to you.
- Stimulate her curiosity as much as possible. Have at least one room where she can explore without endlessly hearing the word "no."
- Prepare a "surprise box" for her with a few safe, interesting items that she can discover herself. Rotate the selection of toys in the box and move it from room to room.
