Feeding myths debunked

Feeding myths debunked

You’ll find that everyone you meet is an “expert” in your baby’s nutrition. Remember: You know your baby best. Understanding these nutrition facts will help you respond to well-meaning advice:

Myth: You should place cereal in your baby’s bottle—it’s easier than with a spoon.
Facts: Placing cereal in your baby’s bottle is a choking hazard and makes it tempting to give him cereal before he’s physically ready. And feeding him this way can increase the amount of food he takes in and lead to excessive weight gain. Feeding from a spoon is important to help your baby develop the oral skills needed to eat solid foods.

Myth: Pureed vegetables should be introduced before fruits.
Facts: Truth is, it doesn’t really matter. Some experts say your baby will be more likely to accept vegetables before you introduce sweeter-tasting fruits. But others say to introduce fruits first because your baby may accept them more willingly. Try whichever you think will work best for you and your baby.

Myth: Feeding your baby cereal will help him sleep through the night.
Facts: Research doesn’t back this one up. Your baby will sleep through the night only when he’s developmentally ready and capable of comforting himself back to sleep.
