Decisions when returning to work

Decisions when returning to work

Making the decision to work outside the home after your baby is born may create some mixed feelings, but know this is natural. Discuss with your family the changes that will affect your lifestyle and time spent together.

Going back into the workforce requires some adjustment for both you and your baby. If you’re breastfeeding, talk with your supervisor and human resources department about your plans to pump at work.

You’re more likely to get a positive response if you explain how this benefits not only you and your baby but also the company. Point out that the company’s support can help your baby get off to a healthy start, which allows you to focus more fully on your job. Explain that breastmilk contains antibodies that help protect your baby from infection, and fewer sick days for your baby mean you’ll miss work less often.

Some employers provide a lactation area where a breastfeeding mom can use a breastpump. If this area doesn’t exist at your workplace, discuss setting one up. Ideally it would be a clean, private room with a comfortable chair, sink, and small refrigerator.

You may also want to look into flextime. Try to coordinate work hours with your partner so that one of you is with your baby in the morning, the other in the late afternoon. You’ll both be able to spend “alone time” with your baby while reducing the number of hours you need to pay for child care.
