Sharing feeding time
Moms and dads have many opportunities to bond with their babies—and siblings can play an important part in that experience, too. Sharing feeding time is one way your whole family can develop a close connection with the baby.
Dad's positive impact
Bottle-feeding—whether the bottle contains formula or pumped breastmilk—lets dad play an active role in feeding time. This way, dad doesn’t miss out on the experience, and mom gets a break to do other things.
Baby benefits as well when dad takes a hands-on approach to parenting. Your baby’s social and cognitive development is fostered by receiving lots of love and care, and feedings with dad are one way to provide that. Plus, dad will appreciate having quiet, one-on-one time with your little one as much as you do.
Older siblings lend a hand
If big brother or big sister wants to help with feeding time, that’s great. But don’t let an older child feed the baby alone. Instead, allow your older child to hold the bottle while you supervise. Or let your toddler gently pat or rub the baby’s back to bring on a post-meal burp—she’ll be delighted by the result! Your older child will feel like a “big kid” when she’s included in taking care of the new baby. Encourage your older child to sing softly to the baby, or to listen to a recorded children’s story together.
