How to choose books for your child

How to choose books for your child

With many children’s books available, it may be hard to know which ones to select—especially for a very young child. Here are some hints to help you sort out the choices:

  • Wordless books stimulate visually and mentally and encourage babies and toddlers to create their own stories.
  • Choose books that are bright and colorful and that use simple words. Babies and toddlers love bright colors and are best at processing simple information.
  • Choose books with lots of rhythm, melody, and repetition. Rhymes are especially good. And the more rhythm and melody you can insert into your reading voice, the more your little one will enjoy the book.
  • The plot (if there is one) should be very simple. Books that simply identify familiar objects instead of offering a plot also are good.
  • Ask your librarian for suggestions. He or she will most likely know which children’s books are better than others and can direct you to developmental references that list quality books and offer suggestions for the reading experiences.
