I've heard that cats carry a disease that can hurt my baby. Can I keep my cat?
Yes, you can keep your cat, but you do have to be careful around your cat’s feces. It can transmit a disease called toxoplasmosis.
Toxoplasmosis is fairly common. In fact a lot of us have had it without even knowing it. As a result our bodies have formed antibodies to it, and so the chance of transmitting the disease to the fetus is small. But if you don’t have those antibodies, the disease organism can cross the placenta and severely damage or even kill the fetus.
Your best insurance is to get someone else to empty the cat box.
