Guide to newborn feedings
Wouldn't it be nice if newborns came with a how-to guide to answer all the questions you might have? Well, until that day comes, here are some tips to help guide you in feeding your baby.
Number of feedings during baby’s first month*
Remember: Every baby is different. Always follow your baby's hunger cues, including crying and bringing fingers to the mouth, and fullness cues, including slowing or stopping sucking and falling asleep, rather than a strict feeding schedule.
Timing: every 2 to 3 hours (8 to 12 times per day) for breastfed infants;
every 3-4 hours for formula-fed infants
Amount: 3 to 4 fluid ounces per feeding
Wet and Dirty Diapers
Average wet diapers: about 6 per day
Average dirty diapers: about 3 to 4 per day
Download a handy chart to keep track of your baby's diapering and feeding habits. Then fill it out and share with your baby's health care provider at her next checkup.
