A Refreshing Summer's Treat—Cherries!

Share one of summer’s most special treats with your preschooler this year – enjoying fresh cherries. The two most common sweet cherries to try are the “Bing” and “Lambert” varieties. If both are available in your supermarket, buy some of each and have your preschooler compare the two. The Bing cherry is the most popular sweet cherry – large, round and very sweet. The Lambert is smaller and more heart shaped. Try a taste test with your preschooler – she may think they are both delicious. And you’ll be happy to know cherries offer potassium, fiber and vitamin C to your preschooler’s diet, in addition to some powerful antioxidants.

Have your preschooler:

  • Wash the cherries in a strainer with water
  • Pick off all of the stems
  • Sort cherries and discard bruised or smashed pieces

Have the adult:

  • Slice and pit the cherries
Ingredients

Try this easy-to-make nutritious salad that’s bursting with flavor. Add some to your preschooler’s lunch for a refreshing treat.

1 cup Apple NESTLÉ® JUICY JUICE® All Natural 100% Juice 1 cup water
1 cup ivory quinoa, rinsed 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 medium red or green apples, diced 1 cup sliced celery
1 cup sliced, pitted cherries 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint (optional)
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 lemon, washed and cut in half

Instructions

PLACE juice, water, quinoa and cinnamon in medium saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low; cover. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Cool slightly; transfer to large serving bowl and cover. Refrigerate for 1 hour.


ADD apples, celery, cherries, mint, oil, salt and pepper to quinoa. Squeeze lemon juice over salad; toss to coat.
