How to swaddle your baby

How to swaddle your baby

When you see newborns in the hospital nursery, they’re often swaddled in a blanket. That’s because swaddling can calm your baby by preventing her from being startled by her own jerky movements.

If you'd like to try swaddling your baby, here are a few pointers:

  • Make sure your baby isn't hungry, wet, or tired.
  • Lay a receiving blanket on a flat surface with one corner folded down about 6 inches.
  • Place your baby on her back, head above the folded corner.
  • Take the corner near your baby's left hand and pull it across her body. Tuck the leading edge under her back on the right side under her arm.
  • Pull the bottom corner up over your baby's body and tuck it into the first swathe.
  • Bring the loose corner over your baby's right arm and tuck it in under the back on her left side.
  • If your baby prefers to have her arms free, do the wrapping below her arms.
