Stress-free tips for moms with newborns
Congratulations on your new baby! Bringing home a newborn can seem overwhelming at first. That’s because there’s no other job as emotionally and physically challenging as being a mom. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the newness of motherhood:
- Recognize that stress is normal. A little anxiety and uncertainty is perfectly natural.
- Engage your family. Dad, grandparents, sisters, and other family members may be able to offer some help. It might be nice to have one of them stay home with you and your newborn for the first week.
- Seek support. Parent groups can offer guidance and support.
- Hang out with other moms. Visit with nearby friends or relatives.
- Barter babysitting services. Offer to watch a friend’s kids for a few hours; then, another day, she can return the favor.
- Choose convenience. Use time-savers such as nutritious frozen foods, take-out fresh salads, and heat-and-eat main dishes. Use paper plates, plastic flatware, and disposable cups to provide occasional relief from dishwashing duty.
- Delegate! If you can, hire someone to help with household cleaning. That way, you'll have more time for your newborn, your family, and yourself.
