Crawler (8+ months)

At around eight months, your Crawler is still learning how to chew. That means finger foods can be a big step for them. You can set them up for success by introducing finger foods slowly starting with small and soft pieces that melt quickly, mash easily, and fit their little hands.

There’s a lot to consider when finding snacks for self-feeding. Try these tips and products:

  • Star-shaped pieces with ridges, like Gerber® Puffs, are easier for baby to pick up.
  • Puff-type cereal snacks that are designed for Crawlers will dissolve quickly in baby’s mouth.
  • Snacks should soften and stay in one piece in baby’s mouth.
  • Look for snacks designed to stick to wet fingers, even if they’re not capable of gripping,
  • Once baby is ready to chew, larger snacks with holes, like Gerber® Teether Wheels, can help them learn how to hold and grasp.
  • Developmentally appropriate cookies, like Gerber® Arrowroot Biscuits, can be easily mashed with or without teeth.

Starting finger foods can feel daunting, but Gerber® snacks can help. They're safe, nutritious, and parent-friendly so you can rest assured you’re giving baby exactly what they need, right from the start.
