Anything for Baby™

Found from the desire to nourish one baby, Gerber has made it their mission to support babies worldwide.

Our Journey

Here's a timeline of our rich history.

1927

It all started with the Gerber family

Dorothy Gerber started straining solid foods for her 7-month-old daughter Sally. After repeating this process many times, Dan Gerber pointed out that the work of straining fruits and vegetables could be easily done at their canning business, based in Fremont, Michigan. Workers in the plant began requesting samples for their own babies, and the legacy of Gerber® baby foods began.

1928

Finding the first Gerber Baby

In 1928, Gerber held a contest to find a face to represent a baby food advertising campaign. Artist Dorothy Hope Smith entered her simple charcoal sketch of a tousle-haired, bright-eyed cherub of a baby with endearing pursed lips. In her entry, Smith noted that she would finish the sketch if she won. Her drawing competed with elaborate oil paintings, but the judges fell in love with the baby face Smith drew, and when they chose it as the winner, they insisted that the simple illustration remain a sketch. The image of this happy, healthy baby was soon to become the face that launched a brand, a face recognized and loved across the globe.

1978

Gerber Baby’s Identity Revealed!

In a poll taken across the United States, people speculated as to the identity of the Gerber Baby. Guesses ranged from movie stars Humphrey Bogart and Elizabeth Taylor to Senator Bob Dole. Over the years there have been rumors of the actress Jane Seymour being the Gerber Baby. But mystery novelist and retired English teacher Ann Turner Cook knew the correct answer: She is the Gerber Baby.

Dorothy Hope Smith, a neighbor of the Turner family, drew the portrait and after more than 85 years, Mrs. Cook’s sparkling eyes and adorable, curious baby face still personify the Gerber brand, representing Gerber’s commitment to happy, healthy babies all over the world.

Choosing the Right Seeds, Varieties & Growing Regions

Making the best food for your little one starts with choosing the right seeds, varieties and growing regions. That’s why we only use those that will make vibrant, naturally sweet and delicious fruits and veggies.

  • Choosing the right seeds
  • Finding the Perfect Growing Regions

Our Ag Team

We are serious about growing food specifically for babies. That’s why we have a team of agriculture experts that work hands-on with the farmers who grow most of our crops. Many of our growers have been working with us for generations, in fact, our growers have partnered with us on an average of 38 years. Together the ag team and the growers: select our seeds and varieties, test the soil, and help care for the crops until they’re harvested.

The Fanfare of the Harvest

Before harvest, our fruits and veggies are checked for taste, ripeness, color and firmness so they’re picked at just the right time to make the very best food for your little one. That way, they taste naturally delicious with NO need for artificial colors or flavors, and they’re always unsweetened and unsalted.

For Gerber growers, there’s no time more exciting than the harvest — particularly the pea harvest. It’s the moment Gerber's Agriculture Team and farmers have been planning for months. We spoke with Chris Falak, an expert on the team, about everything that goes into picking the perfect pea.

Putting Babies First

We are serious about growing food specifically for babies. That’s why only Gerber has a team of agriculture experts that work hands-on with the farmers who grow most of our crops: selecting seeds and varieties, testing the soil and helping care for the crops until they are harvested.

Gerber’s Agriculture team works year-round to put babies first. We caught up with members of the team to find out some of the creative ways they keep your baby’s food full of nutrition while meeting standards strict enough for tiny tummies.

Any great team is unified behind a shared goal. In sports, that’s a championship. For Gerber’s Agriculture Team, it’s making sure babies have fruits and vegetables that are nutritious, full of flavor and safe for their growing bodies.

Clean Field Farming™: Big Standards for Tiny Tummies

You want the very best for your little one to ensure she reaches her full potential, and so do we. That’s why we use super strict Clean Field Farming™ practices to ensure that our fruit & veggie purees are not only nutritious, but also wholesome and safe for even the littlest bodies.

These unique practices guide the way we thoughtfully select our seeds and land, sustainably care for the soil, and trace our harvested crops not only to the farms, but to the very fields where they were grown. That’s why we only partner with a select group of farms that meet our strict Clean Field Farming™ practices.

We think little ones deserve the highest standards set just for them. That’s why we take our mission to deliver the very best fruits and veggies so seriously.

Keeping Soil in the Family

Some soil can have naturally high levels of nitrates and heavy metals, which you don’t want in your baby’s food. That’s why we created requirements for growing our fruits and veggies that are among the strictest in the world.

The Karnemaats have been working their farm in Michigan, perfecting techniques that maintain Gerber’s high soil standards, for generations. To say quality control runs in the family would be an understatement. Dan Gerber, the founder of Gerber, used to walk the fields with great-grandfather Karnemaat. So they know that when it comes to soil, what you get out is what you put in.

Tracing Produce to its Roots

We worry about where your little one’s food comes from, so you don’t have to. In fact, thanks to over 25 years of practice, we can trace 100% of our fruits and veggies not only to the farms where they are grown, but to the very fields. Like our locally grown green beans from the Andersen Brothers family farm, just 150 miles from our Gerber® kitchen.

If there’s one person who understands our obsession with tracking produce, it’s grower, Stephanie Kipp. She’s part of the next generation of growers on the Andersen Brothers farm— one of the many family run farms Gerber relies on for quality fruits and veggies. But Stephanie isn’t just a grower on a farm that's been in her family for over 100 years, she’s also a mom. And she wants nothing but the best for babies, including her own.

Transporting Produce with Care

The care we give our fruits and veggies doesn’t stop at harvest. Because we know when and where they are picked, we make sure they are protected from the elements and transported carefully to stay safe and wholesome on the journey from the farm to our kitchen.

It’s the details, like keeping a close eye on transportation, that help create the highest quality food for babies. Gerber’s Agriculture Team knows the hard work of the harvest wouldn’t count for much if the produce taken from the ground didn’t reach Gerber’s kitchens as safe as possible.

Our Research

With 24 research technology centers worldwide, Nestlé has the largest food research and development network of any food company. Nestlé’s Worldwide Research & Development network provides three fundamental areas of benefits for parents: safety and quality; nutrition and health; and taste, texture, and convenience.

How Our Discoveries Help Your Baby

One of the most notable research efforts is the Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS), an ongoing initiative for the past 17 years to better understand young children's diets and related behaviors.

2002

Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS)

FITS 2002 was the first undertaking of its size and revealed interesting facts about what infants and toddlers were really eating. Several key issues were brought to light —notably that many toddlers failed to get adequate amounts of several important nutrients, including vitamin E, calcium, potassium, and dietary fiber. In addition, it revealed that many infants and toddlers weren’t eating a discrete portion of fruit or vegetable serving on a given day.
